Skin acne and scarring
Acne can persist silently well into adulthood, affecting 20% of women and men beyond their teenage years.
However, not all acne is identical, making it crucial to tailor treatments to your specific skin type and acne sub-type for effective results.
Acne involves several factors that contribute to its development, everyone’s skin is individual to them so we recommend booking a consultation with us to discuss the best route for you.
We treat teen acne
We understand the impact having acne can have on a teenager growing up. Acne can cause significant psychological and social effects on teenagers as well as the high risk of scarring.
Considering this here at SS Skin Medical Aesthetics we offer acne specific treatments tailored to individual needs for teenagers suffering with acne. Please book a consultation to find out more.
Please note parental consent and presence is required for all treatments. Treatment areas include but are not limited to face, back and shoulders.
The science behind acne conditions
-
Excess Sebum Production
Sebum is an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands to lubricate the skin. In individuals with acne-prone skin, these glands can produce an excessive amount of sebum, leading to oily skin.
-
Hormonal Influence
Androgens, male hormones present in both men and women, can stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. Fluctuations in hormone levels, such as during puberty, menstruation, or pregnancy, can worsen acne.
-
Dietary Influence
While the link is not entirely clear, some studies suggest that certain dietary factors, such as a high glycemic index diet or dairy consumption, may influence acne.
-
Bacterial Growth
The bacterium Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) naturally resides on the skin. When hair follicles are clogged, it can multiply rapidly, leading to inflammation and redness.
-
Clogged Hair Follicles
The excess sebum, along with dead skin cells, can clog the hair follicles (pores), creating an environment where bacteria can thrive.
-
Inflammation
When the hair follicles become inflamed due to bacterial growth, the body's immune response is triggered, causing red and swollen bumps on the skin.
-
Genetics
Acne can run in families, suggesting a genetic predisposition to the condition.
-
Environmental Factors
Certain environmental factors, such as pollution and humidity, can exacerbate acne.
What treatments can help acne?
Dermalux Tri-Wave MD & Dermalux Flex

Chemical peels
Chemical peels are beneficial for acne due to their exfoliating properties, effectively removing dead skin cells, unclogging pores, and promoting cell turnover.
By penetrating the skin, these peels can address excess oil, bacteria, and inflammation associated with acne. Chemical peels are also effective for acne scars as they promote skin exfoliation, helping to reduce the appearance of scarred tissue by encouraging the growth of new, smoother skin.
